Ok, I admit it. For such a portenteous name it doesn't look like much. Having taken photo after photo of it I am in complete despair as to how to show it to you. in a way that does it justice. Maybe an explanation of the name will help.
.I had moved one stone, about 30" tall into a spot just above the hot tub; thinking, well this is a plinth. I have always wanted a plinth. Ok, pushed, grunted, groaned, despaired and finally got it into Chuckle's bucket, and I brought it up to the house from the wash in triumph and popped it firmly into place..
My friend, Burr, looked at it and said 'a god stone.' I kind of eyed him. wondering what sort of weird reference this would be, as he is probably less religious than I am. That's saying a lot. 'What's that?' I asked. It's a stone,' he replied, 'that after you move it, you wonder how in god's name did I do that?'
I suppose a point of reference would be the tell you that the pipe-handled shovel you see leaning against the third stone from the left is 5' long. So, you can see that the anchor stone, far left, is pretty big. I am guessing that some of these rocks go 300 to 400 pounds; you cannot roll them.
The wall is about 5 feet tall at its center point, and curves twice. I truly love this wall. It is dry stack that was backfilled and graded. Big rocks are very exciting. Since I do everything by myself, when the stone falls out of the bucket, that is where it goes; causes you to get in and out of the tractor a lot and do much bucket-tweaking.
This tree is what led to the god-wall. It is, I am assuming, very old. About as big as the pgymy Gamble's Oaks get here. I fell in love with it and started out just trimming all the dead wood out. and bracing the long, long branches. Next I built a smallish wall behind it, maybe 2 to 3 feet tall, and then backfilled to make a little terrace. Now this was nice, but I was then faced with an ugly scraggle of various stuff, mainly Apache Plume, about 6 feet tall, between this terrace and the house. So, you can't see it here, but the 50', or so, god-wall is behind this small wall by about 30 or 40 fee. The house would be visible in the right upper corner if the tree fell over - watch out, Waldo!
